Join UMBC as we walk to #stopsuicide

On April 29th, members of the UMBC community in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will participate in UMBC's annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk.

Each year our community walks to prevent suicide, the third leading cause of death among people ages 15-24, and to raise awareness that no one is alone.

The walk also provides our community with an opportunity to raise funds for Maryland's local AFSP chapter. With funds raised from the walk, AFSP can provide educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

There are many reasons to walk. At the event, participants will be able to choose to wear a selection of honor beads, recognizing why they personally have joined the walk. Let us know why you walk.

I wear...

  • Blue beads because I support the cause
  • Teal beads because my loved one struggles
  • Green beads for my personal struggle
  • Purple beads for the loss of a relative or friend
  • Orange beads for the loss of a sibling
  • White beads for the loss of a child
  • Gold beads for the loss of a parent
  • Silver beads for the loss of a first responder or military member
  • Red beads for the loss of a spouse or partner
  • Rainbow beads to honor the LGBTQ+ community

It is completely free to register and participate in the walk. You can sign up as an individual or join a team.
